May 07 NYC Trip 5-06The secretary's trip took us to NYC this year. Started at ground zero and visited St. Paul's Church (the only structure near the site that sustained no damage!). They have theorized that a tree 'caught' most of the debris which saved the church from damage -- and to honor it have saved its trunk on the site. We then went to the South St. Seaport to get a bite to eat, buy some 'designer' handbags, and take some pictures. The Solanco group then went to Madame Tussauds Wax Museum where we 'met' many celebrities and historical figures! After a quick visit to Macy's, we ended the day with a delicious dinner at Lattanzi's. The weather was picture perfect. We had a wonderful, albeit tiring, day! April 30 Mountain AcresWe just returned from a wonderful weekend at Mountain Acres - a hunting lodge near State College PA - to which Tom & Barb Yingling invited several dental school couples: Gladnicks, Donicks, Dillons, Goeringers, McMullens. We thank them so much for allowing us to enjoy this beautiful, tranquil location for a long overdue reunion. Had a great time catching up on everyone's growing families! So much laughter - and so much food! It will take a few weeks to shed the extra pounds, but it was totally worth it! January 05 Grand CaymanWe vacationed in Grand Cayman from Tuesday, November 1, 2005 through Tuesday, November 8, 2005. Started out with 'iffy' weather - the last rains from Hurricane Beta were still hitting the island when we arrived. The Caymanians were disgusted! They (as did we) wanted the sun to come out. We had a lovely room at the Westin Casuarina Hotel & Spa located along Seven Mile Beach - except for the fact that the AC had been set at about 45 degrees! It was beyond cold - and, of course, we hadn't brought any sweaters or warm clothes with us, so there was no way to warm up except to leave the room (and the rest of the hotel as it was freezing everywhere inside!) and go outside. Only glitch there was that it was raining outside! We ended up opening the balcony door to our room - even though there was a sign near the door that said that we shouldn't do that because of the problems they have with humidity (the staff was constantly wiping condensation off windows and other surfaces inside the hotel...). Still, we were there and wanted to see what was around, so umbrella in hand we took off! Found out where some of the restaurants and stores are, but many places are not open as there is still much damage left from Hurricane Ivan which hit the island very hard in September 2004. The sun came out after three days and the remainder of the vacation was great! The highpoint for me was snorkeling with and feeding stingrays! They feel just like cooked portabella mushrooms! Also went to the Turtle Farm and just had fun snorkeling around the reef near the hotel. October 22 Start a Blog?Don't know whether I should start this blog. It seems too much like a diary, and I was never any good at keeping up entries in a diary when I was a kid! But, hey -- it's on this page, so I'll at least enter something for today! Now, wasn't that interesting?! Ha! Maybe I'll have something of interest to say after we get back from vacation. That is, if we get to go on vacation: on the news tonight they mentioned something about a storm that might develop into a tropical depression -- which would be named 'Alpha' since they've run out of hurricane names for this year -- that once again might threaten the caribbean. Great! Guess I'll be following info on the weather channel closely for the next week. |
